Before watching Advent Children you can view a special feature called "Reminesence of FFVII" which will provide those that haven't played FFVII a quick look at the game and those that have a big refresher going into the movie. I found it to be very helpful.

Story Introduction

Advent Children takes place about 2 years after the events of FFVII. At this time Cloud is a part of a delivery service, which also serves as an orphanage for sick children (those with Geostigma)

Cloud, too, has Geostigma. The disease only occurs in some and does not spread, but, it will eventually kill it's host. Supposedly, the Geostigma is due to Jenova cells working through the lifestream.

Cloud is filled with greif and dispair at this point, since the death of Aeris, and hasn't been home in some time. Eventually he is confronted by three men. Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz. They refer to Cloud as 'brother' and order him to return 'Mother' to them. After a small brawl the three make a quick getaway, leaving Cloud behind.

Cloud is then contacted by Rufus and is informed with information regarding Kadaj, his gang, and their intentions. With Jenova's head (Mother) they could bring back Sephiroth and once again attempt to destroy the world. Cloud is then forced to fight again, and battle both his physical, and mental wounds.
